Are you planning your last night of freedom? Hen weekends are a big deal – and you want to make sure that you pick the perfect spot. Whether you are a shopaholic or an adrenalin-junky, you want to party the night away, or spend your days chilling in the sun with friends, we look at some of our favourite locations for the perfect hen weekend.

Zakynthos – Greece

Flight time: approx. 3.5 hours

Golden beaches, clear blue skies, cocktails and glorious days in the Mediterranean sun – the island of Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is a fabulous place to spend your last night of freedom. Relax with your friends on Laganas Beach, before heading to one of the nearby bars for a drink and a snack. Go on a boat trip to Shipwreck Beach, where you can gaze to the endless depths of the crystalline waters. If you are feeling a little more active, head to St Nick’s Beach, for a spot of snorkelling, water sports and a barbeque on the beach. Wander through winding streets of pristine white houses and shops in the Old Town, or venture out of town to explore the countryside. Dine in style at one of the many waterfront restaurants where you can choose from traditional Greek cuisine or more traditional English or American dishes.

Edinburgh – Scotland

Flight time: approx. 1 hour

As far as memorable hen weekends go, Edinburgh ticks all the boxes, which is why it is one of the most popular hen party locations in Europe. From cocktail-making to castles and everything in between, Edinburgh has it all. Walk up to Arthur’s Seat for spectacular views of the city; indulge in a little retail therapy on Prince’s Street – one of the most famous retail spots in Europe, or go ghost-hunting as you explore Edinburgh’s medieval roots.  Treat yourself to a wee dram of whiskey in one of the many specialist bars and pubs; if it’s not to your taste, there are plenty of delicious cocktails and wines to choose from. Edinburgh’s dining options are innumerable, from Lebanese, to Mexican, to traditional Scottish: lashings of local fish, haggis and tatties served in rich, creamy sauces – what’s not to love? At night, Edinburgh’s nightclub scene isn’t exactly buzzing, but there is plenty to do: take in a show, check out a comedy club or sit (stand, or dance) in a pub, as you enjoy live traditional music. With its glorious food, fabulous shopping, stunning streets and architecture, Edinburgh is a fantastic place to spend your last night of freedom.

Sofia – Bulgaria

Flight time: approx. 3.5 hours

Bulgaria’s capital city has a young, fresh vibe that is impossible not to fall in love with. The up-and-coming city is the place to go for an affordable hen weekend and is crammed with stunning architecture against a glorious, mountainous backdrop.

In winter, the hens can hit the slopes of Mount Vitosha for some world-class skiing; outside ski season, you can blow away the cobwebs with a walk or hike through the wonderful countryside. All year round, Sofia’s quaint cobbled streets are perfect for browsing shops packed with beautiful handcrafted ornaments and jewel-coloured clothing. Indulge yourselves with hearty Bulgarian fare: rich stews with dumplings, which are the perfect choice to line the stomach before a night out or to cure a hangover. By night, Vitosha Boulevard springs to life, with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, most of which stay open until dawn. Due to its large student population, Sofia by night is buzzing and, unlike many city destinations, still reasonably priced.

Barcelona – Spain

Flight time: approx. 2 hours

When it comes to your last night of freedom, Barcelona has it all. Culture, architecture, shopping and fantastic night life: what more could you ask for? Barcelona is so packed with things to do that you will be spoilt for choice. The best way to see everything is to catch the hop-on-hop-off tour bus. As the name implies, the bus will take you to Barcelona’s main attractions and you can decide whether to have a drive-by viewing or to alight and take a closer look. From the Olympic Stadium, to Park Güell, Sagrada Familia to Torre Agbar – at every turn, you will see evidence of Barcelona’s love of sport, art and beauty. Alternatively, if you’re feeling more energetic, you can hire bikes and tour the city on two wheels.

Barcelona’s shopping is second to none: browse major brands and sweet boutiques in Barcelona’s chilled pedestrian area, Las Ramblas, where you can dine al fresco and enjoy a glass of sangria as you watch the world go by. By night, there are plenty of opportunities to don your dancing shoes – start off with a cocktail at the Hard Rock Café before venturing out to Barcelona’s many up-market clubs.

Mallorca – Spain

Flight time: approx. 2 hours

Despite its cheap-and-cheerful, Brits-abroad reputation, Mallorca is truly, utterly beautiful. The island’s capital, Palma, is famous for its thumping nightclubs and 24-hour partying, but it also boasts stunning architecture, traditional markets and restaurants – although they can be well hidden. If you love English Bars, Irish Bars, kiss-me-quick beaches and Happy Hour 24/7, then you will love Palma. However, if that’s not your thing, don’t dismiss this little island – it has a lot more to offer than its high-heels and lipstick reputation lets on. Travel a little north and you will discover beautiful port towns, unspoilt beaches and traditional trattorias, where you will get delicious seafood and local cuisine – a far cry from the burgers and chips of Palma. So, whether you fancy a snorkel, or to discover incredible caves, you want to shop till you drop or party the night away, Majorca promises to deliver. And with so much choice, it is a wonderful way to celebrate your last night of freedom.
